Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis), pronounced ROY-bos, is an evergreen legume shrub common to South Africa. One of the beneficial phenolic compounds found in tea made from the fermented needle-like leaves of this shrub is Aspalathin. Aspalathin is reported to improve your metabolic activity.
You and I commonly refer to this type of drink a tea. However, we should call this a tisane. A tea by definition is an aromatic beverage you commonly prepare by pouring hot or boiling water over cured leaves of Camellia sinensis. A tisane in contrast is a beverage made from the infusion or decoction of herbs, spices, or other plant material in hot water, but not Camellia sinensis. Tisanes typically don’t contain caffeine.
