Grosso is a hybrid of two species of lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, and Lavandula latifolia. You create a hybrid by cross-pollinating two different species or varieties of a plant. The offspring, or hybrid, contains the best traits of each of the parents. Cross-pollination is a natural process that occurs within members of the same plant species.
Many lavender hybrids are accidental. Upson, in The Genus Lavandula, reports Grosso was discovered by M. Pierre Grosso in 1972 in a local deserted field. He collected cuttings and planted them in his fields. Since then Grosso has taken over much of the production of Lavender essential oil. Due to its hybrid vigor, this lavender cultivar is a major essential oil producer producing up to 4 times the amount of oil possible from either of its parents. Grosso, like other hybrids from these two species, is typically known as lavandins.
